Hey all -
I'm heading to Virginia Tech in August, and someone told me that it's a bad idea to download on college campus/network because they are more monitored than the average home...
Any input in regards to this? Am I going to have to abandon my music downloading when I head to school?
Thanks

I've heard that some campus network are monitored in the states. I'm guessing that the best thing to do is to ask around at the campus you are going to.
Although it's a bit costly, I can't see how they could ever monitor encrypted ftp access to a seedbox. Could be one way around it, I'm sure there is others. Nature will always find a way ;)

If your using peerguardian and encrypted connections you should be fine. Most trackers now have ssl connections as well.

Is there a setting within the torrent client to manage connection type (to ensure encryption)? I'm using Azureus Vuze, if anyone knows specifically how to do it..
And whether or not it's an SSL connection simply depends on the tracker/site downloaded from? Any idea if what.cd supports this? Any setting I should change?
Thanks.

I'm not sure where the setting would be in Azureus, I'm sure it can be easily found. There is usually 2 options regarding encrypted connections. One being that it will prefer a encrypted connection over a non encrypted and the other being that it will only accept encrypted. The first option is what most people use.
ssl.what.cd
not all trackers offer this since it is a extra load on the server.

I work for a telco provider in the US and we installed a wireless mesh on our ISP with radio's all over including a local university so the students can have internet freedom. The nice part is unlike dsl and cable it is synchronous... 5mb up and 5mb down.. great for seeding

Encrypted connections always helped out a ton with me when I was at school.

I know uTorrent has an "enable encrytion" option in it.
I'd enable encryption and limit UL/DL to something reasonable if you're not going to have a seedbox for torrenting there... And I would ofcourse try to ask some people there about things before doing more :)

I was reading around, and it looks like you can connect via VPN to avoid being tracked for bandwidth.
I'm thinking the combination of VPN connection and Azureus encryption should do the trick.
