Help Needed

I've read in many threads about many sites i've never heard of and have no clue about.
Is there a thread somewhere that explains what most of these sites are or something?
I have no clue what PTN is (or what it stands for that matter) or x264 (I looked and all i found were sites talking about the codec itself) or many others are.
Can somebody please help me and explain what all these sites are?.I'm new and pretty much know nothing right now.

Some of them are blocked, but there's a sort of dictionary. Hope this helps.
