I bought a PS3 a few weeks ago, and the question of backward compatibility didn't hit me till I saw Parasite Eve on my friend's desk the other day.
He goes, "No, the PS3 isn't backwards compatible at all."
So I wanted to try and prove him wrong. I go home and put Socom 3 in for the PS2. "This version of the PS3 does not support PS2 data."
I insert XIII for the PS2. Once again, same statement.
I put in Final Fantasy 8 for the Playstation, and it starts playing.
WTF? So it can play PS games but NOT PS2 games?
ps3 ... or any console for that matter = crap gaming *let the flaming commence*

there are certain versions of the PS3 that will, part of their way of cutting the price was to remove the backwards compatibility.

That has nothing to do with what I asked. You fail.

That's pretty lame. I really didn't know that.
Oh well. I can always hook up my PS2, if I need some old school gaming.

So you aren't able to save your games? I haven't actually tried. I just popped Final Fantasy 8 in and realized it worked.

no PS3 is the best
As far as I know, the only PS3 that's has reversible compatibility for PS2 was the 60gb version. You can find on ebay and craig's but for a lot of money.
