I've used several different programs over the years (no commercial ones yet, though), all with varying results in regards to quality (Xvid deserves a special mention; I've never been able to encode a film using Xvid with the quality of a scene release). What is your program and codec of choice for encoding your own DVDs? Does anyone know what's popular among scene groups? TIA.

I'm using Nero for this kind of operations.

There are some great guides over at doom9; I've put the links below for convenience sake.

Auto Gordian Knot (http://www.doom9.org/autogk.htm)
+: high quality, designed specifically for beginners
-: If you want to play with every switch XviD has to offer, this tool is obviously not for you

Gordian Knot (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main4.htm) - XviD 1.x
+: High quality, rather easy to use unless you want to configure every parameter
-: Not quite a one click solution as AutoGK

Gordian Knot / Virtualdub (http://www.doom9.org/xvid.htm)
+: High quality, detailed explanation of each codec setting
-: relatively complicated

As far as the specifications that the scene groups use for XviD rips well you'll conveniently find that here (http://d0pe0r.1go.dk/rules/txd2k5.nfo). (If you have any issues opening the .nfo file use notepad or something similar.)

Hope I've been helpful. :)

There was a similar thread on here recently. I recommended meGUI because I think GK is outdated. GK does have the aspect ratio error and bits/pixel info which meGUI doesn't, though.

MacTheRipper if you're on a mac. It's the most comprehensive tool for removing any kind of copyright/region restrictions. Otherwise, Handbrake is pretty good. And I've heard good things about GK.

I tried many including DVDfab, DVDshrink and others finally found the most easy to use and fast version that I prefer is Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate 5.0.32.0328, these are the guys who also make the very nice convertxtodvd that I also use to convert any video and burn it to DVD without having to play around with settings or anything, just point and click... I love both of these programs, Xilisoft is a great vendor. offcourse you need to pay or... find a way to .. use them for free :P

I guess the best bet for ripping DVDs would be DVDFab or DVDShrink, then encode the data with VirtualDub or NanDub along with K-Lite. At least that's what I've been doing for quite some time and works like a charm.
