Who of us are using NAS systems at home instead of seedboxes?

Actually, the popcornhour NMT is not a pure NAS per see, but does amazingly well. Although the Sigma Design chip is specialized for BluRay players and runs at 300 MHz, the torrent client (transmission) is capable to utilize all your bandwidth.

From the the other side, all low level SOHO NAS systems I have tested were not suitable for torrenting (except maybe Buffalo's Linkstation to some extend), so I had to build one myself making use of an old 2.4 GHz Celeron machine with 1GB RAM and just adding a bunch of drives.

Much cheaper than a NAS and much more efficient. :)

Ok and do you have remote access to this low cost system?

The network access is like to any Win computer.

I was a little bit concerned that if I install Vista on it (didn't have a XP installable disk) it will be too slow with only 1GB RAM (to make the things worse, part of it was shared with the video card), but the reality proved otherwise. It runs like a charm since nothing else is running on the box except the torrent client and the memory is sufficient not to cause any slow down.

I shared the disks (2 x 1 TB external USB) and the speed of transfer to my local network is ~35 MB/sec over a 1Gb LAN This is more than enough to stream BluRay disks and is a lot more than you can achieve with a low cost SOHO NAS. For example the speed from/to my Raidsonic 4220 is only ~7 MB/sec although it has 1 Gb LAN port too.

Even more, with RDP enabled and properly forwarded ports in the router I have full remote access over internet like I am in front of the computer.

Really, it is very easy and efficient.

I have nothing against QNAP.

However, believe me, for less money you can easily build a much better one. Scalable and configurable to your needs and taste.

Even without any *nix knowledge :)
