View Full Version : Turn my computer into a seedbox

I have a home server which is on 24/7 and has high bandwidth and plenty of disk storage space. I was thinking of helping some users from this forum by turning it into a seedbox that some lucky members of this forum could use along with me, entirely free of charge. Is there any chance that I can do that? And if yes, could someone explain to me what I must do? I'm not a newbie either in computers or in filesharing but I don't know anything about seedboxes.

it can be done. firstly is it running windows or linux ? i suggest linux and using Flux as it is very easy to configure and get running and you can control alot more whats going on.
Great idea +1000

Well I'd rather used it under Windows because it would be a lot easier for me. I'm not an expert in Linux...

By the sound of it Flux is easier to configure, and using linux would ultimately mean more options, but if anyone can give any more info about a seedox running on Windows please let deliric know ;)
Also, great idea mate, they would be lucky users! +2000 :D

You should use µTorrent's WebUI if you use windows, and tflux if you use Linux.

So basicly it's enought to have the WebUI and to give the password to the other users ?

see here's the thing. depending on how many users you plan on sharing with ? How much is your download and upload TBH It is highly suggested you run Flux as you can control all of this. If you plan only allowing 1 or 2 members than webgui would work.
If you need any help getting flux installed let me know i can have it done and running in bout 15-20 minutes on a clean install of centos/fedora linux

For starters I will allow just 1 user of this forum to use it, and I will choose someone I know I can trust and that has experience in this kind of thing. I think if there is only 1 user there shouldn't be too much of a problem. I will give him let's say 20 GB of storage for him to use and I will see how this thing evolves over a months time. If there are no major problems I will go up to 3 users for a month and so on to as many as I can. The problem is that the server will not be used only as a seedbox, so my plan for the future is to buy another server to use exclusivly as a seedbox, which would be running Linux, and then it could be used by a lot more people. But this is not going to happen very soon, it might take me a year until I get there. For starters I will try to have everything running in 1-2 weeks.
As I said, I am goind to use WebUI for starters and give one user 20 GB of storage space. and test this scenario for 1 month. Do you think that's OK?
Any advice would be very apreciated...

Ok I just thought a problem... I have an account on TL for example I download something on the seedbox. And the other user also downloads something from TL on my seedbox from his account. Wouldn't appear like I have two accounts on one ip adress? Thus resulting a ban... Am I right ?

That's what the passkey system is for, you'll be fine.

Official news: The seedbox has been tested and technicaly speeking is working, but I need more bandwidth for things to go smooth. So I will have to postpone it for a while, until I can afford to buy more bandwidth. I hope it doesen't take too long

Here's a link that might help ya about setting up a FTP server in 10 minutes or less.

Thank you so much, I will read it as soon as I get some spare time.
But the problem is no longer the setting up. At the rate that I'm seeding my bandwidth is enough to get me 200-300 k/s with no problem. But if there are a lot files beeing seeded and a lot of traffic going on I cannot guarantee that speed for every file. I need to make some calculations about the bandwidth I need and that will take me some more time. I'm doing the best I can to rush things.
I will keep u posted

Well, I am very pleased to announce that he has managed it :)
With almost no help, he has mastered it and for that alone he deserves a lot of respect and recognition.
But what I find even more amazing, is that he has let me share his box with him :D
I just want to say again deliric thank you so much, and I'm sure everyone will agree with me this is generosity at it's highest form ;)
